Silversun Pickups – Neck of the Woods

Silversun Pickups have long been indie darlings of the alternative/modern rock radio set, carving through the clutter with easy to digest tracks like, “Panic Switch, ” 2006’s massive hit, “Lazy Eye,” and the latest single, “Bloody Mary (Nerve Endings).” However, Silversun Pickups are very much an “album,” band, with challenging deep cuts in their previous efforts as part of a cohesive whole. Their predominantly “shoegaze” genre is not always the easiest to swallow, but rewards the listener in understanding the overall concept over long and complex song structures. Take the time.

Karmin – Hello

While the internet is chock full of “viral,” success stories, there are few more poignant that that of Karmin. In a music world that is very much still holding tight to traditional promotion and media, they took full advantage of the possibilities of the internet, throwing up much buzzed about covers of artists like Chris Brown, Adele and Lil Wayne. This lit a fire through the e-tastemakers of sites like Reddit.com, scoring the duo a major deal to record their own material. While songs like “Brokenhearted” take a more-straight forward pop approach, it’s singer Amy Heidemann’s emcee-esque chops that gained her recognition and are the stand-out trademark of these up-and-comers.

Keane – Strangeland

Keane’s success has always seemed steady, with the band quietly selling over 10 million albums worldwide. Ironically, while sounding most like Coldplay, they are more or less the anti-Coldplay, shrugging off the Chris Martin bravado and focusing on the band as a whole, leading with piano instead of guitars and maintaining the kind of “indie cred,” that put them in with the likes of Mumford & Sons and The Long Winters as part of the Mt. Desolation side project. They certainly aren’t shaking things up with this latest album but their familiar, non-offensive nature may work in their favor, maintaining the loyalty of their fan base and bringing in a few new ears.
