Frank Ocean – Channel Orange
OFWGKTA (or better known as Odd Future) is known for some outlandish behavior, primarily from leader Tyler, the Creator and hijinks associated with their Jackass-esque prank TV show, Loiter Squad. However, outside the backpacker hip-hop leanings, OF’s biggest swing at mainstream success falls into the hands of member Frank Ocean, who has created a tidal wave of buzz leading up to the release of this debut. The usual chaos surrounding Odd Future hits the eye of the storm in Ocean, featuring smooth R&B that teeters the line of the “indie” cred of the collective and the beacon of light towards the talent that they hold. The groundswell is in full force with this critically acclaimed effort that makes its own noise outside the noisiness of its origins.

HELLYEAH – Band of Brothers
The music industry has had its fair share of supergroups lately, from the Joss Stone/Mick Jagger lead Superheavy and the folk outfit New Multiudes (featuring Jim James and Jay Farrar) However, in a world of new collaborations, one has proven massive success, the metal masterpiece that is HELLYEAH. Featuring members of Mudvayne, Pantera, Nothingface and Damageplan, their previous two albums have debuted in the Top 10, with legions of devoted fans spreading the word. The common ties between the bands are clear and this album, more than any of them, really projects the paths of these artists from their previous bands to now and presents it as brand new.
