KONGOSThis week, we’ve been all about Michael Jackson and our exclusive tracks. After a string of solo success, Jackson signed with Epic Records in the late 70’s and released all of his music through the label, including Off the Wall, Thriller and Bad. Current Epic President L.A. Reid is responsible for unearthing and finishing the songs for XSCAPE from Jackson’s archives.

While Jackson is a major part of the history of Epic Records, we’re also excited to talk about the future of the label, including the recently-signed Kongos. The band skyrocketed to success with its No. 1 alternative radio hit, “Come With Me Now,”  (the fastest rise to No. 1 ever.) The group has performed on late night TV and just today was named a VH1 You Oughta Know artist. Kongos have already embarked on an extensive summer tour that includes several festival stops, then heads into fall sharing a bill with Kings of Leon.

The Kongos brothers (yes, they’re actually related) are from Arizona by way of South Africa, where they have been hugely successful for years, thanks in large part to the legacy of their father, John Kongos. They include his hit in their artist playlist, which includes artists from around the globe, jokingly titled “You’ll Feel Worldly ‘n Sh*t.” Check it out now on Music Unlimited.

Artist Playlist – Kongos

  1. Bob Marley – Sun Is Shining
  2. Amadou & Mariam – Djama

Every week, we round up some of the great new Featured Playlists you can find on Music Unlimited on the web, mobile & now PlayStation®4 & PlayStation®Vita. Check out the latest below!

2014 Stagecoach Country Music FestivalStagecoach

Stagecoach, California’s biggest country music festival, runs April 25-27 this year. Besides such massive hitmakers as Eric Church, Jason Aldean, Luke Bryan and Florida Georgia Line, Stagecoach also includes beloved legends John Prine, Lynard Skynard and Don McLean as well as Americana outsiders such as Shelby Lynne and Hurray For The Riff Raff.

RayCharlesRay Charles: MU Icon

A towering figure in American music, Ray Charles melded the proto-rock jazz of Louis Jordan and the sophisticated supper club vibe of Nat Cole and Frank Sinatra with the earthy howl of the black church. This is a complete portrait of The Genius at work, from his groundbreaking R&B hits to his big band and orchestral sessions and his detours into hard-bop instrumentals, country and the blues.

ClassicalNRClassical New Releases

We inaugurate this Classical spotlight with new releases from young titans like Julia Fischer, Laurent Korcia and Simone Dinnerstein as well as generation-spawning giants Daniel Barenboim and Claudio Abbado. The Bad Plus were already infamous for turning indie rock tunes into jazz instrumentals. Now, they put their own stamp on Stravinsky’s The Rites of Spring.

DaveFridmannDave Fridmann: Behind the Music

In the ‘90s, Dave Fridmann helped bands like The Flaming Lips and Mercury Rev (with whom he was once the bassist) achieve a broad and shimmering neo-psychedelic sound. He has since become one of the most sought-after producers in the game, adding magic to albums from MGMT and Tame Impala and numerous others.

JamaicanSkaJamaican Ska & Rocksteady

The pre-rock ‘n’ roll explosion of R&B and jazz wasn’t solely an influence on the USA. The advent of transistor radios meant that places like Jamaica were also able to hear the sound of young Black America. The result, when combined with the surrounding sounds, was ska and gave a voice to artists like Desmond Dekker and Bob Marley. Highly energetic and locally produced, it became the sound of Jamaica in the early to mid ‘60s before it slowed down a bit, added more harmony and called itself rocksteady.

FutureFuture: Artist Picks

With Future’s new album out, take the time to explore the deep funk and hip-hop sounds of the Dungeon Family, including Outkast, Killer Mike & more, hand-picked by the man himself.
